About

Embark on a journey through nature's wonders with the Six Mile Hydro Walkway, nestled 10 km south of Murchison along Matakitaki Rd. Discover the rich history of the hydro scheme as you start your adventure at the small turbine house, where an information panel unfolds the tale. The track winds through beech forest, offering stunning views from a viewing platform overlooking a waterfall and the weir at the beginning of the water race.

As you traverse this scenic path within the Tutaki West Conservation Area, encounter pest traps that contribute to preserving the natural ecosystem. On the return leg, follow a parallel track that unveils the in-ground water race, connecting the weir to the reservoir, and enhancing your exploration. Delve deeper into history with the Kawatiri Historic Railway Walk, just a 20-minute return journey from Kawatiri Junction. Located at the intersection of State Highway 6 and 63, this easy walk takes you along the former railway track from Nelson to Murchison. Begin your exploration at the car park adorned with informative panels detailing the area's vibrant history.

Adventurous souls can cross an old rail bridge and traverse an eerie train tunnel built in 1923, surrounded by beech forest above the Hope River. With a torch recommended for the tunnel, this looped trail captures the essence of the past while immersing you in the beauty of nature. Uncover the tales of the Kawatiri Historic Railway as you traverse its remnants and relive the bygone era.
