About

Gisborne is the largest town in the Tairāwhiti Gisborne region and is the first city in the world to see the sun each day. In this relaxed and seemingly untouched part of the country, the world moves slowly; horses and bare feet are common forms of transport. So, take your time and enjoy this unique part of New Zealand. Māori culture and tikanga (practices and values) are proudly expressed in the Tairāwhiti Gisborne. Intricately carved meeting houses and beautifully painted Māori churches are dotted throughout the region and have many stories to tell. Be sure to visit the magnificent Tikitiki church. Listen for conversations spoken in Te Reo, and why not learn some basic Māori phrases or say "Kia ora" when you greet people. Venture up Mount Hikurangi, the sacred mountain of the Ngāti Porou people, and you'll see giant carvings of figures from Māori folklore. Or, visit the extremely long wharf at Tolaga Bay or feed some friendly stingray at Tatapouri. Climb the hundreds of steps of the East Cape Lighthouse to see the sunrise bless the new day. Quality vineyards, cellar doors and groves of colourful citrus are showcased in the region. Try a world-famous Gisborne chardonnay and delicious local produce. The sunny Tairāwhiti Gisborne is famous for its beautiful beaches and surf breaks. It's the perfect destination for diving and swimming and all outdoor activities. See the first light. And get there before everyone else does!
